Document – Paenitemini by Paul VI
Summary
This is an important document about an aspect of asceticism written
at the beginning of one of the most turbulent periods in human history. Our current experience is the maturity of that turbulence where the s/Spirit, God and spiritual have
taken a backseat particularly in the so-called developed Europe and North
America. Although a rich theological document, by implication it unveils a
fundamental dimension of human spirituality.
Religious fasting is a personal act, a prayer in communion with
the community/Church, for the love of and surrender to God. It isn’t merely a
withholding or denial of solid food/drink over a period of time for personal
profit, rather the personal benefit is a secondary effect. This act is also
accompanied by purity of mind, control of sight, clarity in listening and
modesty in words. Acts of charity and almsgiving naturally apply.
The document highlights fasting as an effective holistic
action, a non-trivial undertaking and serious commitment in relationships. It is
a profound act of love. Effective fasting is an involving, life-giving and
self-emptying process deployed towards extending and expanding holistic personal change.
Fasting is a human act, a form of self-denial; observed in diverse cultural, religious and spiritual
traditions including Christianity where it is an inheritance transformed by Jesus
Christ. It is self-denial that improves self-mastery among many benefits.
It’s effectiveness is not guaranteed only by outcomes rather in
the high quality of commitment invested in its execution throughout the fasting
duration. One must be attentive, present, drained of malice, interiorly active
and devoid of evil disposition. Effective fasting is done with attention,
intelligence, reason and responsibility. Patience and humility are needed to
calm the mind from wandering particularly when the pangs of hunger start to bit.
A fasting mind must be docile. Fasting is one way of expressing determination
for goodness, intelligence, truth, beauty and love.
Fasting is not a condemnation of the human body, rather it
enhances its liberation from the wounds of contingency (human condition) and sin. It is an
important tool of spiritual warfare and holistic restoration of a person and
the community respectively. Paul VI recommended fasting for the age cohort 21 –
60.
Fasting is a comprehensive act of love, a holistic and
integrated commitment by one in communion with others for the greater glory of
God.
I strongly recommend this short document.
