Public Lecture - A Reflection on Dynamic Survival of African Spirituality from Antiquity
Abstract
African spirituality
concerns the complex, dynamic and holistic human expressions contextualised in
the consciousness of its peoples, which is shaped by their civilisations and
cosmologies since antiquity. Given the universality and irreducibility of human
dignity and human condition spirituality is a universal quality inherently
influenced by contexts.
This reflection centralises the
legitimacy of African spirituality on its merit while showcasing its
consistency and coherence through a sample of core themes from its vast
treasury. Historical and discursive analyses are used while focusing on reinforcing
relevance in the 21st century. Critical links are emphasised while
similarities with other civilisational and continental spiritualities are
explicated. This foregrounds African spirituality as an invaluable and
indispensable treasure of global importance.
